As modern power systems become more complex and decentralized, managing data from different sources is a growing challenge. Renewable energy, weather data, and grid operations all generate information that must be shared and understood across systems.
This publication, titled SARGON2 Ontology: Updating SARGON Ontology for Semantic Data Sharing in the Energy Domain and produced by RWTH Aachen University, introduces SARGON2, an updated ontology designed to improve how energy data is structured, shared, and interpreted.
SARGON2 builds on the existing SARGON ontology by expanding its coverage to include renewable energy sources, weather information, and power system and building components. By linking these elements together, SARGON2 enables both humans and machines to better understand complex energy data and uncover meaningful relationships across domains.
The ontology integrates established standards such as the IEC Common Information Model (CIM), ensuring compatibility with existing systems. This improves semantic interoperability, allowing different stakeholders, such as utilities, operators, and data providers, to exchange and use data more efficiently. Developed using a semi-automatic framework, SARGON2 also reduces duplication and increases accuracy when combining multiple data sources.
By providing a more comprehensive and structured representation of energy-related information, SARGON2 supports the development of data-driven solutions and facilitates collaboration across sectors. This is especially important as energy systems continue to evolve toward greater digitalization, requiring scalable and flexible tools that can adapt to rapidly changing data environments and support smarter, more coordinated decision-making.
