Who gains access to energy communities, and which solutions work best in densely populated urban environments? These questions are at the centre of an upcoming online event that brings together research and practice from Austria and across Europe.
The session, “Accelerating urban energy prosumption: Lessons from Vienna, Austria and Europe”, will take place on 15 June, from 13:30 to 15:30 CEST, and is organised by the partner ZSI – Zentrum für Soziale Innovation within the framework of the ACRP research project UrbEnPro.
The event will explore key findings from UrbEnPro, with a particular focus on social justice, inclusion, and socio-spatial differentiation in urban energy transitions. It aims to shed light on how energy communities emerge, who is able to participate, and which barriers shape access in practice.
Alongside scientific insights, the session will include applied perspectives from practitioners working directly with energy communities. A key contribution will come from our partner ICLEI, which will present results from its work on energy communities, including experiences from the CRETE VALLEY project.
The session format combines short scientific and practical inputs with a moderated, evidence-based discussion, designed to encourage reflection across disciplines and contexts. By comparing Austrian and international experiences, the event aims to derive transferable lessons, identify context-specific constraints, and discuss broader implications for governance frameworks in Austria and beyond.
