On Thursday, May 23, our series of visits to the Community Energy Labs (CELs) continued with an inspiring trip to the Lasithi Plateau. The project team had the occasion of exploring the site that will be dedicated to the construction of the traditional windmills—a celebrated landmark and an integral part of the Plateau’s rich cultural heritage.
Following this, the team visited the future site of the biogas production unit near the village of Kaminaki. Currently, the biogas unit supports the heating needs of just 2-3 households. However, with the addition of a complementary biomass unit, CRETE VALLEY will soon be able to meet the energy needs of 20 households, significantly expanding our impact.
An informative event was then held in the village of Tzermiado, bringing together residents and stakeholders. A detailed presentation showcased the new energy infrastructure planned for the Plateau and its benefits for the local community. The biogas production unit will feature facilities for processing both liquid and solid organic waste, including used fats and vegetable oils, bakery waste, livestock manure, whey, clover, and silage. This waste will be transformed into biogas to power a cogeneration unit, providing both thermal and electrical energy. Participants can look forward to heating costs reduced by at least 50% compared to current oil-based systems.
In addition, five small electric windmills, each with a nominal power of 3 kW and designed to reflect traditional windmill aesthetics, will be installed on a pilot basis. Developed by the Mediterranean University, these innovative windmills are harmonized with the natural environment and demonstrate cutting-edge energy production technology.
The event saw a turnout of about 30 people, primarily residents and owners of small agricultural and livestock businesses. Key figures such as representatives from the Region of Crete, the Mayor of the Lasithi Plateau, members of the Minoan Energy Community, ICCS, and the Mediterranean University were also in attendance. Their contributions enriched the presentations and discussions, highlighting the essential role of local and regional governance in advancing this project.
