The Region of Crete has launched the Advisory Committee for Hydrogen in Crete, a new strategic body that will guide the island’s efforts to integrate hydrogen technologies into its clean-energy transition.
Coordinated by the Region of Crete and involving leading research and academic institutions, including the University of Crete, the Technical University of Crete, the Hellenic Mediterranean University, FORTH and HCMR, the Committee will focus on how hydrogen can serve as both a long-term energy storage solution and a clean fuel for transport, industry, and power generation.
This initiative is closely linked to CRETE VALLEY, as our project is already advancing pilot actions for hydrogen production, infrastructure planning, and integration into local energy systems.
The Committee’s first meeting was held on October 8 to outline the priorities for Crete’s emerging hydrogen strategy, including mapping existing capabilities, promoting collaboration among research and business actors, and addressing key challenges such as permitting, regulation, and spatial planning.
Hydrogen is expected to play an essential role in Europe’s future energy mix, potentially accounting for up to 12% by 2050. With its abundant renewable energy potential and research expertise, Crete aims to become a reference region for hydrogen innovation in the Mediterranean.
