Representatives of the DISCO project visited the CRETE VALLEY district heating project in Arkalochori on 22 October as part of DISCO’s annual partner meeting, hosted by the Region of Crete, which is also a partner in CRETE VALLEY.
The programme began with a visit to the district heating system currently under construction, followed by a presentation at the Minoa Pediada Town Hall in Arkalochori. Aris Tsekouras, representing the district heating project and CRETE VALLEY, introduced the initiative and guided participants around the construction site, presenting the progress of the works and the system’s main features.

The visit generated considerable interest among the participants, who actively engaged in discussions and raised numerous questions about the project, its implementation and its expected benefits for the local community. The subsequent presentation at the Town Hall provided an opportunity to explore the project in greater detail and exchange knowledge and experience.
The district heating project is a flagship demonstration of CRETE VALLEY’s vision for sustainable and community-centred energy systems. Once operational, it will use locally available biomass resources to provide renewable heat to households and public buildings, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and greater local energy resilience.
The DISCO consortium brings together partners with extensive expertise in district heating and cooling. Its work focuses on increasing the uptake of district heating, improving system efficiency and promoting solutions such as waste heat recovery and district cooling. The visit therefore provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the progress of the CRETE VALLEY district heating project and exchange insights with European experts working to advance sustainable heating and cooling across Europe.
